The decision to close the old cinema was inevitable, though it
remained controversial among residents who had grown up there. Some argued there
wasn't sufficient evidence that a new development would benefit the neighbourhood
at all, and their concerns seemed to contradict the council's optimistic reports.
Others pointed to the tremendous cost of maintaining a building that few people
visited anymore. I appreciate both sides of the argument, but I think we should
give considerable weight to what residents actually want. An ambitious redevelopment
plan sounds appealing, yet I remain reluctant to celebrate until local voices are
genuinely included.
